A cacao methylxanthine
Theobromine belongs to the same broad chemical family as caffeine. Cacao typically contains substantially more theobromine than caffeine, although actual concentrations vary.
Theobromine and caffeine are not identical
They overlap in chemical family but differ in pharmacology and typical dietary exposure. That makes it misleading to describe cacao as simply “caffeine-free energy.”
Quantity matters
The relevant exposure depends on both the cacao concentration and the serving size. A concentrated ceremonial drink can deliver more cacao solids than a lightly flavored beverage.
Individual response varies
People differ in sensitivity to methylxanthines. If you notice palpitations, sleep disruption, headache, digestive discomfort or other unwanted effects, reduce intake and seek professional medical advice when appropriate.
